Product Manager, Discovery

What do we do?

Teachers Pay Teachers (or TpT, as we call it) is a community of millions of educators who come together to share their work, their insights, and their inspiration with one another. We are the first and largest open marketplace where teachers share, sell, and buy original educational resources. Our community brings immediate access to a world of expertise and offers educators more time to focus on students and teaching.

The New York Times called the phenomenon we lead “A Sharing Economy Where Teachers Win”.

Why do we do it?

Our dream is to make the expertise and wisdom of all the teachers in the world available to anyone, anywhere, at any time. We believe that we can help create real good in the world by empowering the educators to teach their best.

Who are we looking for?

We modeled our company culture on the virtues of our community of teachers and we are assembling one of the most talented teams in New York. We think this article in EdSurge about sums it up.

We’re building a team of deeply good people doing great things. We listen first. We love our work. And we are all teachers and learners in whatever we do. We believe that productivity is never an accident. It’s the result of a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning, passionate teamwork, and focused effort. We want every day to be fun and to matter.

Role:

TpT is looking for a product manager to play a critical role in improving our discovery experiences across channels (desktop, mobile web, mobile app, offsite) and flows. You’ll lead a cross-functional team to rethink discovery experiences for resources. You’ll also work closely with the Search & Personalization teams as well as the rest of the Product team (including other PMs, Design, and Engineering) to deeply understand our educators’ needs and to help educators discover the right resource from among the 3 million resources available on TpT. Our ideal candidate will use design thinking, user research, analytics, A/B testing, and iterative development to build intuitive experiences that help educators discover fresh and relevant content to improve the quality of education in their classrooms.

Responsibilities:

  • Define the vision and strategy for how resources should be discovered in the marketplace.
  • Research and map discovery user flows happening both on and off our platform across channels (desktop, mobile web, and mobile native)
  • Create intuitive and seamless browse experiences for educators who are not yet sure of exactly what they need.
  • Iterate on our resource taxonomy and categories. Simplify TpT’s taxonomy to make it easier for our users to discover content.
  • Work with Search & Personalization teams to improve the overall resource discovery experience.
  • Ensure that landing experiences from Google search, Facebook & Pinterest lead users into garden paths that guide educators to resources they need.
  • Communicate internally and externally the vision and execution of discovery across the marketplace. Earn trust from key stakeholders across teams by understanding their perspectives and sharing your insights
  • Lead TpT into defining an industry standard for how K-12 teaching resources should be organized. Work with industry leaders like Google in defining this standard.
  • Balance the breadth and depth of our resources with educators' very specific and personal needs.
  • Combine a strong product sense with the ability to execute and launch great products with clear goals and measurable success factors
  • Become an expert in our educator community and their daily experiences

Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of experience building products
  • Deep interest in creative and impactful user experiences
  • Track record of using qualitative and quantitative data to prioritize and drive decision-making
  • Systems-level thinker who can take on challenges that span multiple site flows and experiences.
  • Able to openly share opinions, ideas, and discuss, while focusing on discovering the truth
  • Able to chart a course and iterate as the organization and technology evolves and changes.
  • Open-minded, collaborative, eager to learn and solve hard problems
  • Tech-savvy and able to communicate complex technical issues to a wide range of audiences
  • Demonstrate humility, curiosity, versatility, and creativity

Extra credit:

  • Design experience
  • E-commerce/Marketplace experience
  • Education or teaching experience
