Join our team!
Trail of Bits helps secure the world’s most targeted organizations and products. We combine high-end security research with a real-world attacker mentality to reduce risk and fortify code.
As a cybersecurity research and consulting firm, we serve clients in the defense, tech, finance, and blockchain industries. We help with their most difficult security challenges by designing and building new technology, researching new techniques to advance the state of practice, and reviewing the security of the latest available technology products before they hit the market.
Our team consumes, produces, and presents research as a natural part of doing business. When we make new discoveries or developments, we strive to share our knowledge and release our tools as open-source. It’s a practice that’s earned us industry accolades and helped contribute to our double-digit bottom line growth.
Is an internship right for you?
If you’re a scientist or engineer with an interest in computer security, we should talk. We have no rigid requirements such as degrees or years of experience; some of our staff never went to college, others have graduate degrees. We’d really like to hire people with strong programming skills in C/C++, Python, JavaScript, or languages in the functional space (e.g. OCaml, Haskell, Scala, &c), people with strong reverse engineering and vulnerability analysis skills. If you have experience with systems programming, program analysis (dynamic binary instrumentation, symbolic execution, abstract interpretation, etc.), reverse engineering, or application and software security assessments, we may be the perfect team for you.
Types of internships we offer:
Winternship - 3 weeks over Winter Break
Remote, short-term winter internship opportunities. Winternships generally happen over your University’s winter break. You can get paid to work on a short-term and achievable project that excites you and still spend time with your friends and family.
Summer Internship - 2-3 months over the Summer Break
Full-time summer internship opportunities. Summer interns work out of our New York office on medium-sized research projects. We commonly accept returning summer interns year after year.
Co-Op Internship - 6 months in the Fall or Spring semesters
This internship opportunity is for students who attend universities that require a co-op internship as a condition of graduation (ie. Northeastern University). Co-Op interns work full-time in our New York office alongside our full-time engineers. We don’t have any junior engineers at Trail of Bits, so our Co-Op interns’ experience most closely resembles that of a junior full-time employee. You’ll get ample mentorship and support, but you’ll also be expected to deliver on exciting projects for our commercial products and consulting clients.
Ongoing Part-time - Rarely, on a case-by-case basis
Occasionally, when the fit is right, we offer ongoing part-time internships for select candidates. Most times, these interns are prior Summer, Winter, and Co-Op interns who would like to continue their projects beyond the timeframe of their formal internships.

What you can expect from all our internships:

  • Help picking a topic that excites you, is achievable, that you can talk about after the project is complete
  • Ongoing support and mentorship from a Trail of Bits engineer
  • A platform to share your internship achievements on our blog and/or by presenting at our bi-monthly in New York, Empire Hacking
  • Competitive monetary compensation

If you’re not seeing any of the above positions specifically listed under the INTERNSHIPS category on our Lever page, it might mean that none of our programs are currently recruiting for new candidates.
Do not fear!
Programs typically open about 2 months before the season. If interested, you should check back regularly and submit your application to a specific program. In the meantime, you can fill out the form below to share your resume and indicate your interest. While you may not hear back from us immediately, we’ll keep top resumes on file and reach out to qualified candidates when a new internships season starts.

An Insider's view of Trail of Bits

What’s the vibe like in the office?

Our offices are very easy going. Since half our employees are remote, we’re a remote-first company that just happens to have 20 people working in NYC. This gives us the benefit of a flexible remote culture but also have a place to get away from home and socialize with coworkers without rigid hours.

Principal Security Engineer

How do you collaborate with other teams in the company?

Half of Trail of Bits is remote, so online collaboration and communication keeps us running. We make heavy use of Slack, Google Docs, Github, Trello, and video calls. Each project has its own Github repository and Slack channel, where most project communication occurs. A weekly video call provides high-level updates to the whole company.

Principal Security Engineer

What makes someone successful on your team?

Successful people at Trail of Bits are self-motivated and committed to doing their best work. They are team players that are willing to participate and be involved with projects across the company. They are curious, embody a growth mindset, and actively watch out for new opportunities to help the company grow and thrive.

How would you describe the company’s work-life balance?

Trail of Bits makes it really easy for each of us to create the work-life balance that works for us as individuals. There is a lot of flexibility around when and where we work, and our tools and workflows make collaboration easy in a variety of settings.
