Abstraction Specialist

| Greater NYC Area

**To apply to this role, you must have previously worked as an Oncology Abstractor for Flatiron**

At Flatiron we are building a disruptive software platform dedicated to oncology that connects cancer centers across the country on a common infrastructure. Our platform aggregates and transforms real-world data at a scale and clinical depth never seen before.

The process is carried out by our Abstractors - nurses, certified tumor registrars, and research professionals who work in a full or part-time capacity to extract complex clinical insights from EMRs. The Abstraction Specialist is part of a specialized subset of the remote abstraction team and will report to the Clinical Abstraction Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Abstracting clinical data from patient charts using Flatiron’s proprietary system
  • Triaging and responding to abstractor questions
  • Performing patient-level quality assurance on dataset deliverables
  • Helping with feasibility and initial testing of novel data points or new abstraction approaches
  • Assisting with testing of new Patient Manger tools or features.
  • Meeting task and/or review panel targets as determined in consultation with team leaders and management
  • Obtaining and maintaining credentials to abstract on a number of modules, as determined by management
  • Participating in regular team teleconferences and other meetings as required
  • Maintaining a high level of performance, as measured by both efficiency and quality scores
  • Working a minimum of 32 hours/week and submitting a weekly timesheet
  • Traveling to New York City for in-person meetings at least 1-2 times per year

Requirements

  • At least 6 months experience working as an abstractor for Flatiron Health preferred.
  • Track record of strong abstractor skills with Flatiron Health as demonstrated by consistent abstraction quality and efficiency.
  • Certified tumor registrar, registered nurse, physician assistant, or equivalent, with significant hands-on experience working in oncology (5+ years).
  • Familiar with all aspects of how cancer is treated, from diagnosis to recovery, and fluent in cancer terminology.
  • High comfort level with technology and familiarity with EMR systems.
  • Demonstrated exceptional attention to detail.
  • Experience with data entry, including strong typing skills, preferred.
  • Active nurse/PA license or CTR certification, as applicable.

An Insider's view of Flatiron Health

What kinds of technical challenges do you and your team face?

An engineer and oncologist work together over several weeks to build an algorithm from a naive prototype to a highly specialized and flexible rule set that can accurately represent the lines of therapy for 95% of patients within a specific disease subset.

Abhishek

Software Engineer

How does the company support your career growth?

As engineering manager, I am invested in the professional development of the people I work with. I train team members by pulling them out of their comfort zones to the uncomfortable territory. At Flatiron, it is one of our values - greatness and comfort rarely co-exist.

Kevin

Software Engineer

What is your vision for the company?

At Flatiron, we believe that learning from the experience of every cancer patient is an imperative — it is the key to accelerating research and continuing to improve the quality of care. Our mission is to serve cancer patients and our customers by dramatically improving treatment and accelerating research.

Zach Weinberg

Co-Founder, President and COO

What's the biggest problem your team is solving?

Instead of studying the cells, I now have the opportunity to write about the patients. I can tell their stories through the research lens and enable them to advance clinical cancer research through their experiences. I certainly never lose sight of the human behind the cell anymore.
