Architectural Designer

| Greater NYC Area
About Common
Common is the nation’s leading community-driven property manager, improving city living across 6 cities and for over 650 members. Using our signature approach to perfecting the modern rental experience, Common designs and operates coliving and traditional apartments in New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.

Common’s hands-on, end-to-end property management and technology offering allows us to deliver unparalleled services that address the actual needs of today’s renter while providing significantly above-market returns for our real estate partners. This makes us the preferred choice for city-dwelling adults looking for a stress-free and all-inclusive living environment.

It’s an exciting time to be part of Common’s team. We challenge ourselves every day not just to think about ways to make city living better, but to activate on those ideas in meaningful ways. Our team is comprised of real estate professionals, designers, engineers, salespeople, marketers, client service representatives, and so much more. We work collaboratively, value self-startership, and embrace a “whatever it takes” mentality to ensure our work is done and done well.

Common was founded by General Assembly co-founder Brad Hargreaves and has raised over $65MM in venture funding.

Common is seeking an Architectural Designer to join our Design and Construction Team to create homes for shared living. The ideal candidate will have a Masters Degree in Architecture, and be comfortable in an evolving, fast-paced startup environment. We are looking for an intelligent individual who can navigate the balance between both the qualitative and quantitative; the creative and practical. The position will require the candidate to jump between layouts, calculations, diagramming, drafting, coordination, and illustration. This is an opportunity for a talented thought leader to help conceptualize and execute better housing across multiple cities at a large scale.

About the Role
Common is seeking an Architectural Designer to join our Design and Construction Team to create homes for shared living. We are looking for an intelligent individual who can navigate the balance between both the qualitative and quantitative; the creative and practical. The position will require the candidate to jump between layouts, calculations, on-site scoping, drafting, coordination, project management, and illustration. This is an opportunity for a talented thought leader to help conceptualize and execute better housing across multiple cities at a large scale. This role will report to the Director of Architecture.

Responsibilities
  • Work closely with internal Real Estate team to design and analyze homes in our pipeline. This includes conducting testfits and feasibility studies in parallel with a financial pro forma across a wide array of housing typologies.
  • Since Common is not the AOR for our homes, you will collaborate with our partners’ architects to ensure quality of the brand through advisory and review. This includes schematic programming, layouts, coordination with local architects, drawing review, writing specifications, FF&E design, and construction administration. Unlike the experience one would get in a traditional firm, the job will not include production of drawing sets or formal exploration.
  • In addition to project-specific design, we are constantly refining and challenging our model for shared living. Through architecture, we strive to create buildings in which community transcends anonymity? To optimize our designs with feedback data from other teams, you will be verbally and visually communicating ideas through diagramming and illustrations to fold architectural thinking into our brand.

This is an excellent opportunity to join an exciting start up at an early stage, as your work will have a meaningful and significant impact on both the member experience and the formation of future processes at Common. The ideal candidate is someone looking for a less traditional career path, and instead act as a hybrid between a real estate developer, a conceptual housing investigator, and an architect.

Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Architecture required
  • 2+ Years of experience in an architecture/design firm required. Internship level experience accepted
  • Professional experience in residential design is strongly preferred and portfolio must demonstrate experience or thinking in housing or residential design.
  • Professional experience with US city approvals (code or zoning) preferred
  • Eye for interior design and finishes preferred
  • Proficiency in Rhino, Autocad, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign required
  • Candidate must be detail-oriented and comfortable supporting ideas with both qualitative and analytical reasoning
  • Candidate must be very organized and be able to multitask across large number of projects with various deadlines
  • Candidate must be a continuous learner who enjoys researching, testing and implementing best practices
  • Candidate must be a direct and proactive communicator who can be independent but ask questions when needed

An Insider's view of Common

How would you describe the company’s work-life balance?

This is of the best startups I’ve ever worked at in terms of life balance. I love the “grown-up” approach: how can you provide the most value to your team? Excellent hiring practices ensure that my colleagues and I are all intensely focused on success, but just as importantly, we have modern, busy outside lives, and those lives are respected.

Marni Goltsman

What does your typical day look like?

As our first Product Manager, every day looks different! I'm thinking strategically about initiatives in our roadmap, getting consensus on minimum viable product designs, drafting tickets and working with engineers, and supporting them through the development process. I also support other departments' technology requests and manage their priority.

Joel

What does career growth look like on your team?

Cross-department moves and promotions are encouraged and welcomed always! On my team specifically, my manager is super interested in helping us grow and learning what responsibilities we want to take on to further our career growth. We focus on each other's strengths and make sure that we are working at our full potential.

What makes someone successful on your team?

On Common’s marketing team, I love that success means more than just putting your head down and getting the work done. Everyone is empowered and encouraged to take a step back, look at the bigger picture, and decide what’s really important for our consumers to know about us. It allows us to not get too in the weeds and be the best team we can be.
