Don't settle for boring. 7 NYC tech companies that want to hire you

Ambitious, but bored? Know you could be doing more, but stuck in a job that's going nowhere? Life's too short to settle for mediocrity. New York's tech scene is booming, and companies are hungry for ambitious, hardworking, creative talent. If you're looking to spend your days doing something other than surreptitiously watching YouTube videos in a cubicle, here are seven of New York's hottest tech companies hiring right now.

What they do: Thrillist calls themselves “a leading men's digital lifestyle brand, providing all that's new, unknown or under-appreciated in food, drink, entertainment, nightlife, gadgets, and gear.” But, realistically, their content seems to be read by tons of men and women.

Why you want to work there: Thrillist is on a hiring spree, a rarity in the digital media world. What’s more, they recently launched a new publication dedicated to just to booze. How fun is that?

Best perks: Employees at Thrillist get Summer Fridays, free food and drink, insurance and a casual, pet-friendly work environment.

What they do: Axial runs an online network for professionals who run, advise, acquire or finance private companies. It’s kind of like Facebook but, instead of posts of people’s children, CEOs and transaction professionals are busy building relationships, giving advice and growing their organizations.

Why you want to work there: Axial’s members, the people you’d ultimately be working for, are the real deal. It’s pretty sweet to be working with a group of movers and shakers. Plus, the team just looks like a nice bunch.

Best perks: There’s an education stipend, a gym subsidy, weekly catered lunches, lots of snacks and, of course, a beautiful, bike-friendly office in the Flatiron District.

Insider tip: “What we look for in candidates is an understanding and genuine care of the problem we are trying to solve for our customers. Our best candidates have a natural intellectual curiosity, question the status quo with relentless tenacity, and are ambitious in the way they approach their role and responsibilities to ultimately help this market, and our company, succeed.” — Barry Marshall, VP of People Operations at Axial

What they do: Peloton is bringing the cycling studio into people’s homes. They build high-end stationary bikes and then provide on-demand rides with elite-level instructors directly to the bikes or a mobile device.

Why you want to work there: The company received a massive round of funding back in December, and is growing like crazy. Not only will you be working for a fast-growing startup, you’ll be working for one that’s making people healthier.

Best perks: Peloton employees enjoy a flexible work schedule, a comprehensive benefit package and all that normal stuff. They also get some healthy-company perks like healthy snacks, healthy catered lunches on Friday and unlimited cycling classes. Don’t worry, they also have beer.

Insider tip: “As our name suggests, Peloton employees work and achieve as a team. Across the board, we hire innovative self-starters who thrive in a fast-paced environment. Our people focus on results, and aren't afraid of a challenge.” — Kristy Foss, Director, Human Resources

What they do: OrderGroove's technology platform puts customer subscription data into the hands of marketers and customer care teams.

Why you want to work there: The company was founded in 2010, but already counts some of the world's largest companies among their clients — we're talking CVS, Walmart, GNC, L’Oréal and Bare Escentuals. They've got to be doing something right.

Best perks: Unlimited vacation days, 401k, flexible work schedule, no dress code, an in-office kegerator, bottles of wine, lots of snacks, and a massive, 6,000-square-foot furnished terrace with amazing views of downtown Manhattan.

Insider tip: "Commerce is undergoing the greatest disruption since the invention of e-commerce in the '90s. OrderGroove is enabling this disruption and business-model transformation for major brands and retailers via subscription and membership services. We're creating a new category which requires a tremendous amount of heavy lifting and teamwork. We are a dynamic team of diverse backgrounds and are looking for top talent who is passionate about enabling disruptive technology and innovation for enterprise-level clients to catapult us forward toward the next stage of rapid growth on our incredible journey." — Greg Alvo, CEO and founder

What they do: Main Street Hub operates a full-service marketing platform that combines social media, customer reviews, mobile and email marketing.

Why you want to work there: Main Street Hub puts a lot of effort into building a strong culture and team work environment. If you want to work in a close-knit group in a startup environment, they have it.

Best perks: Employees at Main Street Hub get 100 percent paid medical, dental and vision insurance, as well as 50 percent of premiums paid for their dependents. We’ve also heard talk of an espresso bar and barista from Houndstooth Coffee and fully stocked kitchens.

Insider tip: "We hire for a variety of roles here at Main Street Hub, and one common trait we look for across all departments is individuals who identify with our values and our mission of serving local businesses and supporting local economies. When candidates have a passion for our mission, product, and what we are building, it really shows in their performance and they rise to the top." — David Schreiber, Senior Manager, Recruiting

What they do: Bankrate helps people make financial decisions. They aggregate financial rate information and help people make the best choices in financial situations.

Why you want to work there: Bankrate takes employee culture seriously and realizes that while salary is important, things like supporting people’s individual development and creativity are equally as important.

Best perks: Tuition reimbursement, paid paternity leave, a stocked kitchen, and a casual work environment.

What they do: MakeSpace is what happens when technology gets into your storage unit. They provide storage bins, pickup and on-demand storage that replaces the need for more traditional self storage. Want to put those winter clothes someplace for the summer, they’ve got you covered.

Why you want to work there: MakeSpace just pulled in a big round of funding in February, and the service has only been rolled out to Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Chicago and New York. That means there’s still plenty of room for the company, and their early employees, to grow, and some VC money to get them and you there.

Best perks: Free space, which, if you live in New York, you realize is as valuable as gold. There’s also an office in Soho with catered lunches, an espresso machine, a refrigerator dedicated to beer, good benefits, a hypo-allergenic office dog named Stanley, and a ‘build your ideal workstation’ program.
